Photographic luck is the story here. Red squirrels are common in Southern California; great photo opportunities are not (in my experience).
Standing in the back yard late one afternoon with my Canon AE1 Program (film type? I forget. Exposure? On program. ), this little guy scrambled down the tree about ten feet away, stopping when he saw me. Keeping the camera in focus with my finger tight against the shutter button, I slowly edged my way toward this avocado tree, wondering how close he'd let me get before bolting into the urban jungle. Each successful step I took seemed twice as remarkable as all the previous ones combined. Finally, I decided not to push any closer or push my luck too far. This is the result.
